"POSTAL SERVICE" ISSUES

India Postal Service Collection 1895-1910 Used including Rupee Values

This overprint is only found on the stamps of Queen Victoria & King Edward VIII which were overprinted Postal Service in Calcutta and were first used in 1895.

They were used exclusively by post offices to indicate the amount of customs duty to be collected on foreign inward parcels brought to India by Mail Steamers up to 1910. they are normally cancelled in Magenta.

To account for sums collected as customs duty on articales received by the foreign post and delivered in India Ordinary stamps overprinted "Postal Service" were introduced from 1st April 1895 but sold to public until 1906.
